Joey Logano started fifth and finished eighth in the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang in Saturday’s Lilly Diabetes 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Logano qualified in the seventh position which earned him a fourth place starting position for the first 20 lap Heat Race of the afternoon. Logano quickly grabbed the third position at the drop of the green flag and held it for the full 20 lap race. Finishing third in the heat race meant the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang would line up in the fifth position for the 60 lap main event. Logano spent the majority of the race running in the top-five and at one point ran as high as third before settling into the fourth position. Following a successful green flag pit stop, Logano cycled through and gained a position utilizing crew chief Brian Wilson’s short pit strategy. The race ran under green flag conditions until a caution with 12 laps remaining. Wilson called the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang in for another four tire stop. Unfortunately, a lug nut would drop off the wheel stud resulting in a slow pit stop and relegating Logano to eighth position and the dreaded outside line for the first restart of the event. Logano would drop to the 10th position before rallying back on the final restart of the event to finish eighth.

“It is pretty hot. I don’t know. We had a fifth place car and we stepped on ourselves a bit there and turned it into an eighth place finish. We should have finished a little better than that. We have to clean it up. If we aren’t fast, we have to be able to execute and right now we can’t do either. We just aren’t fast enough right now and I’m not sure what else to say about it. It is frustrating, that is for sure. If we do everything perfect, we finish in the top-five.”
